BEE Star Rating in India: What It Means for Your Product and How to Get Certified

If you manufacture or import appliances in India, BEE Star Rating compliance is not optional — it's mandatory for market entry. Here's everything you need to know.

India's Bureau of Energy Efficiency (BEE) runs one of the world's most robust energy labelling programmes. The BEE Star Rating system helps consumers identify how energy-efficient a product is — and it directly affects whether your product can legally be sold in the Indian market.

Whether you're a domestic manufacturer or a foreign exporter, understanding BEE certification is critical before your product reaches retail shelves in India.

What Is the BEE Star Rating?

The BEE Star Rating is an energy performance label mandated by the Energy Conservation Act, 2001. Products are rated on a scale of 1 to 5 stars — 5 stars indicating the highest energy efficiency. The rating is prominently displayed on the product and its packaging, helping consumers make informed choices while pushing manufacturers to innovate.

💡 A product with a 5-star BEE rating can consume up to 50% less electricity than a 1-star equivalent — translating to significant savings for end users and a powerful marketing advantage for manufacturers.

📋 Which Products Require BEE Certification?

BEE covers products under two main categories: Mandatory and Voluntary.

Mandatory Products

Air conditioners, refrigerators, ceiling fans, LED lamps, electric motors, distribution transformers, and more.

🔧

Voluntary Products

Washing machines, televisions, computers, water heaters, diesel gensets, and agricultural pump sets.

🏭

Industrial Equipment

Compressors, electric motors above 0.37 kW, and commercial & industrial appliances under the scheme.

🔄 Step-by-Step BEE Certification Process

  1. Product Testing at BIS/NABL LabGet your product tested at a BEE-empanelled laboratory against the relevant Indian Standard (IS).
  2. Application Submission to BEESubmit the application form, test reports, product details, and manufacturer information to BEE.
  3. BEE Review & Star DeterminationBEE reviews the test data and determines the applicable star rating based on energy performance benchmarks.
  4. Label RegistrationOnce approved, your product gets a unique registration number and the BEE label design is finalised.
  5. Renewal & SurveillanceBEE certifications must be renewed periodically (typically every 1–2 years) as energy norms are upgraded.

⚠️ Consequences of Non-Compliance

Selling mandatory products without a valid BEE label in India can result in:

Important Update (2024–25): BEE has revised the minimum energy performance standards (MEPS) for several product categories. Products that previously held 3-star ratings may now require re-testing and re-certification. Ensure your certification is current.
