The EU Battery Regulation (EU) 2023/1542 covers every battery sold in the EU: portable, LMT (e-bike and e-scooter), SLI, industrial and EV. It also covers batteries built into devices. It brings CE marking, detailed labelling, producer registration (EPR), and from 2027 QR codes, removable portable batteries and a digital battery passport. Global Approbation turns this timeline into a clear action plan for Indian exporters.

EU Battery Regulation: Frequently Asked Questions

Does the Battery Regulation apply to batteries inside my product?

Yes. Batteries incorporated into appliances are covered, and from 18 February 2027 portable batteries in appliances must generally be removable and replaceable by the end user, with limited exceptions.

What is the battery passport?

A digital record, accessed through a QR code, that is required from 18 February 2027 for LMT batteries, EV batteries and industrial batteries over 2 kWh.

Do I need to register as a producer?

Whoever first makes batteries available in each EU country (often your importer) must register under EPR. We coordinate this with your EU partner.

Has due diligence been delayed?

Yes. The supply-chain due diligence obligations were postponed to 18 August 2027.

Regulations, standards and deadlines change. Scope, testing route and timelines are confirmed product by product after our applicability review. Global Approbation is a consultancy and does not itself issue certificates; approvals are granted by the relevant authority, accredited laboratory or certification body.
