Every electronic device marketed in the United States must meet Federal Communications Commission (FCC) rules on radio-frequency emissions. Radio transmitters such as Wi-Fi, Bluetooth, cellular and RFID products need a formal FCC Certification (FCC ID); many other digital devices can use the Supplier’s Declaration of Conformity (SDoC) route. Global Approbation handles testing, filing and labelling for Indian manufacturers, end to end.
FCC at a Glance
| Regulator | Federal Communications Commission (FCC), USA. Rules in 47 CFR, mainly Part 2 (authorization) and Part 15 (RF devices) |
|---|---|
| Two routes | Certification: test report reviewed by an FCC-recognised Telecommunication Certification Body (TCB), which issues a grant and FCC ID. SDoC: tested by a competent lab, with a US-based responsible party declaring compliance |
| Who needs Certification | Intentional radiators (Wi-Fi, Bluetooth, Zigbee, LoRa, RFID, cellular), plus certain other categories set by FCC rules |
| Who can use SDoC | Many unintentional radiators: computers and peripherals, power supplies, LED drivers, digital appliances without radios |
| What you receive | A grant of equipment authorization listed on the FCC database with your FCC ID, or an SDoC compliance file with the FCC logo/statement on the label |
| Validity | No expiry, provided the product is not changed. Modifications may need a permissive change or a new grant |

How Global Approbation Handles FCC for Indian Manufacturers
- Route decision. We confirm whether your product needs Certification or SDoC and which FCC rule parts apply (Part 15B, 15C, 15E, 22, 24, 27 and so on).
- Grantee setup. FCC Registration Number (FRN) and grantee code for your company, plus US agent for service of process designation.
- Testing. Emissions and radio testing at an FCC-recognised accredited laboratory; RF exposure (SAR/MPE) evaluation where needed.
- Filing. We compile the application (test reports, schematics, block diagram, photos, user manual, label, attestations) and manage TCB questions until the grant issues.
- Labelling & launch. FCC ID label or e-label, compliance statements for the manual, and documents ready for Amazon US and your importer.
Documents Checklist
- Product description, model list and photos
- Schematics, block diagram and operational description
- User manual and label artwork
- Existing test reports (CE RED, BIS, WPC/ETA, TEC) for gap review
- Company registration details for FRN and grantee code
- Samples, including test-mode firmware for radio products
FCC: Frequently Asked Questions
What is the difference between an FCC ID and FCC SDoC?
An FCC ID is issued after a TCB reviews your test report and grants Certification, which is required for radio transmitters. SDoC is a self-declaration route for many non-radio digital devices: the product is tested, and a US-based responsible party keeps the compliance records. No FCC ID is issued under SDoC.
Can I use a pre-certified Wi-Fi or Bluetooth module?
Yes. Using an FCC-certified module can remove the need for full radio testing, but the finished product usually still needs Part 15B unintentional-emission testing, and the host label must show the module’s FCC ID (“Contains FCC ID: …”). Integration conditions in the module grant must be followed.
Are CE RED or WPC test reports accepted by the FCC?
Not directly, because FCC limits and methods differ. Existing reports help us plan testing and sometimes shorten it, but US-specific FCC testing by a recognised lab is required.
Does FCC certification expire?
No. A grant stays valid as long as the product is unchanged. Hardware or RF changes may need a Class I/II permissive change or a new FCC ID.
Regulations, standards and deadlines change. Scope, testing route and timelines are confirmed product by product after our applicability review. Global Approbation is a consultancy and does not itself issue certificates; approvals are granted by the relevant authority, accredited laboratory, certification body or notified body.
