In the US, electrical product safety is certified by Nationally Recognized Testing Laboratories (NRTLs) approved by OSHA, such as UL, Intertek (ETL), CSA and TÜV. A UL or ETL listing mark is what US importers, big-box retailers, Amazon, insurers and electrical inspectors look for. Without one, many buyers simply won’t list your product. UL / ETL: Frequently Asked Questions
What is the difference between UL and ETL?
Both are OSHA-recognised NRTLs that test to the same US safety standards. A UL mark and an Intertek ETL mark show the same compliance; the choice usually comes down to cost, lead time and what your buyer or retailer prefers.
Is UL certification legally required in the USA?
There is no single federal law requiring UL for all consumer products. However, NRTL certification is required for many products used in workplaces, is expected by electrical inspectors under the National Electrical Code, and is required by most major retailers and Amazon for many electrical categories. In practice it is essential for market access.
Can a CB certificate replace UL testing?
A CB report is a strong starting point and can reduce testing, but US national differences, US-rated components and the NRTL’s factory inspection are still needed. The CB report itself is not a US listing.
Will my factory in India be inspected?
Yes. NRTL certification includes an initial production inspection and ongoing unannounced follow-up inspections of your manufacturing site, carried out by the NRTL’s local inspectors.
