From 20 January 2027, the Machinery Regulation (EU) 2023/1230 replaces the Machinery Directive 2006/42/EC. It brings new rules for high-risk machinery, safety components, AI-driven and connected machines, and digital instructions. How Global Approbation Handles Machinery CE
- Classification. Machinery, partly completed machinery or safety component, and whether it is Annex I high-risk.
- Risk assessment. Assessed against Annex III essential health and safety requirements using EN ISO 12100.
- Standards & testing. Type-C standards applied; electrical safety (EN 60204-1), EMC and noise testing.
- Notified Body (if required). EU-type examination or full quality assurance for high-risk categories.
- DoC, CE & instructions. EU Declaration of Conformity, CE marking and compliant (digital) instructions.

When does the Machinery Regulation apply?
From 20 January 2027. Until then, machinery is placed on the market under the Machinery Directive 2006/42/EC.
Can I keep my Machinery Directive CE file?
It is the starting point, but it must be updated to the Regulation’s requirements, including new essential requirements and references in your EU Declaration of Conformity, for machines placed on the market from 20 January 2027.
Does my machine need a Notified Body?
Only if it falls into the high-risk categories in Annex I. Part A always needs third-party assessment. For Part B, you can self-certify if harmonised standards are fully applied.
Are paper manuals still required?
No. Digital instructions are allowed, but you must provide a paper copy free of charge if the customer requests one at the time of purchase.
